Phil Mickelson - Secrets of the Short Game

Phil Mickelson - Secrets of the Short GameArnold Palmer has one. Jack Nicklaus has one. And now, Phil Mickelson has one. No, we're not talking about the Masters championships (although Mickelson has three of those), but a golf instruction video. Emmy-winner Terry Jastrow, who produced Palmer's and Nicklaus' own bestselling videos, brings his keen eye to this master class that concentrates on what Mickelson calls "the most important part of the game" (half of all shots played take place inside 50 yards, he states). Over the course of this nearly two-hour program, Mickelson demonstrates putting, chipping using his advocated "hinge and hold" method, bunker play, and his signature "flop shot." In an entertaining segment, he also demonstrates two specialty shots, a "Two Balls in Bunker" shot (don't try this at home) and the "Backward Over-the-Head" shot. The demonstrations are repeated in slow-motion and seen from a variety of angles. This program is for the serious golfer, but beginners need not feel too intimidated. Mickelson is a natural in front of the camera and is able to impart a lot of information in a relaxed style that makes even the most advanced concepts accessible. As one golf commentator exults during one of the dramatic highlights clips included as a bonus feature, this is as good as it gets. --Donald Liebenson

Good Week for Tiger Woods on WGC Bridgestone

Tiger Woods ended up playing on Sunday at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at 1-over 281. He will sometime around the middle of the field of 80 places.

That will be showing as a disappointment by many to be seen. But it's a good week, in my opinion, Woods conditions.

The WGC-Bridgestone was Woods ' first tournament since May. He had only full swings again a few weeks before practicing. Having regard to the fact that he had not his new swing under the knee before his injury timeout, and given the fact that he almost two months without any full-swing practice went, could some really terrible forest carded scores.

He could have played like he did on the 2010 Bridgestone, where he was four over par rounds posted, closed with a 77, and ended on 18-over 298.

But he didn't. Woods posted a good round-an opening 68 and two solid rounds (second-round 71, final-round 70), with only a third round 72 that included some poor bring count as a disappointing round.

No, it's not a performance that indicates Tiger can win the PGA Championship this week, but there is no reason to expect such a performance. It was solid, and Woods closed on a good note with three birdies in the last four holes on Sunday at Firestone. In my opinion, that it was a successful week for forests.

Where does he go from here? As noted, is the PGA Championship this week in Atlanta Athletic Club. The only other tournament that Woods is aiming to at this point is the Australian Open in November, the week before the presidential Cup. That is a good indication that forests play the presidential Cup will if requested (and USA captain Fred Couples has said that he will attract Woods as Woods healthy).

Tiger also plays in Notah Begay charity event in a few weeks, plus we can assume that, if healthy, he has his own Chevron World Challenge the first week of December will play.

The FedEx Cup playoffs? Woods began the WGC Bridgestone 10 spots outside the Top-125, the Top 125 players in the Barclays in two weeks.

Atlanta Athletic Club Site of 2011 PGA Championship

Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, GA., is the site of the 2011 PGA Championship. This is the third PGA Championship played on AAC, and fourth big men.

AAC was also the home club of Bobby Jones. Wait ... was not Jones ' club East Lake Country Club? Then why Atlanta Athletic Club claim to be "home club of the legendary golfer Robert Tyre" Bobby "Jones Jr." on its website? Both statements cannot be correct, right?

Actually, they are. Atlanta Athletic Club and East Lake Golf Club (home of the Tour Championship) can claim Jones legacy, because once-at-a-time they were the same.

AAC's original location was in Downtown Atlanta, and the club golf course was East Lake Country Club-where Jones was a member. In the middle of the 1960s moved AAC North of Atlanta to what is today the city of Johns Creek, building a new course. The old course was East Lake Golf Club, no longer connected to AAC, and later the site of the Tour Championship. So today, AAC and East Lake accurately call their heritage as home to Jones, although Jones never actually played golf at the current AAC site.

Who won the previous PGAs on AAC?

2001 PGA Championship: David Toms defeated Phil Mickelson by a stroke after successfully making par from the rough on the final hole, despite until short of water on the par-4. 1981 PGA Championship: Georgia native Larry Nelson was the popular "domicile" winner, Fuzzy Zoeller beat by four. Jerry Pate won the 1976 U.s. Open at Atlanta Athletic Club.

What the great champions of AAC's have in common? All three are southerners: Nelson and Pate are Georgians; Toms is from Louisiana. Would be a benefit as from the South at the games in Atlanta, a k a "Hotlanta"? Probably just a coincidence.

And how about that for the week? The weather channel prediction for Johns Creek currently high temperatures around predicts 90F (32 C). Given how hot been much of the USA in the summer of 2011, which are not entirely bad seems (where I am consistently been above 100F for a large part of the summer), but much depends on the humidity.

Atlanta Athletic Club is also the site of a U.s. women's Open (1990, won by Betsy King) and on his previous East Lake location-the 1963 Ryder Cup. That Ryder Cup is the one who gave the expression, "Nice putt, Alice!" to the Gulf.

Stricker ties major Championship scoring Record

Steve Stricker is the leader of the first round at the 2011 PGA Championship with a record-tying 63.

Stricker of 63 not only the PGA Championship record-equalling, but also matches the lowest score posted in each of the four men's majors. Stricker closed his round with four straight pars; a birdie on one of them and he would be the first player ever that card a 62 in a men-become great.

Stricker is the 11th player to shoot 63 at the PGA Championship, and the first since Tiger Woods in 2007. Overall, he is the 25th player to shoot 63 in a major.

See:
List of golfer who shot 63 in a major

Something to keep an eye on: the 72-hole scoring record for majors was established at the 2001 PGA Championship, which was played on ... Atlanta Athletic Club. Site of this year's PGA. Maybe Stricker (or someone else) will go to match or lower that record.

Tiger Woods misses the Cut at PGA Championship

The 2011 PGA Championship remains the weekend without Tiger Woods. Woods followed his opening 77-round with a second-round 73 on Friday, finishing at 10-over 150 and also outside the cutline.

It is the seventh missed cut of Woods ' career on the PGA Tour, and his third in a major championship as a pro.

Where forests that goes from here is a good question. He could enter next week's Wyndham Championship, and thus is his only (remote) in hopes of getting one of the FedEx Cup playoff tournaments. Woods has until the end of round 2 of the PGA Championship to that decision. His next scheduled tournament is different, the Australian Open Nov 10-13 (he also plays the one-day Notah Begay III Foundation Challenge on August 31). He could choose to play a European Tour event or two in the meantime, or visit the Japan Tour of the Asian Tour. Or take that whole leave and practice, practice, practice.

The most surprising thing about forests and missed savings is not that he is missing the cut at the PGA Championship, but that he has not missed more cuts in 2010-11 seasons. The way that Woods gets talked about, you'd think he missed the cut in any tournament. Here's a look at the actual performance of the Tiger's period "desert" of 2010-current:

2010 12 PGA Tour 1 missed cut begins withdrawal 1 2 Top 10s 6 Top 20s Woods two Top 10s were both majors (The Masters and U.s. Open).

2011 8 PGA Tour begins 1 cut 1 withdrawal 2 missed Top 10s one of Top 10s was again in a major, The Masters.

It Is surprising to see that Woods "only" two slices over the past two seasons has missed? It's not that Woods is terrible play all the time, it is that he rarely plays great.

What these results tell us is that forests, is certainly not a bad golfer during 2010-11. He is only an ordinary golfer. A solid PGA Tour player but one that is not among the elite. In other words, is not just Tiger itself.

The larger problem is that he gets these results without much (if any) signs of progress. Is that because the Sean Foley swing just not good for him? Is that because he is too many injuries that prevented him from working as hard as necessary to the new swing master has had? Or is there too much psychological scars from his self-inflicted blow up at the end of 2009? All of the above? What do you think?

Update: Woods did not enter the Wyndham and so is officially out the FedEx Cup playoffs. He said that the following tournament he will play, but the door (somewhat) open to play a tournament fall series or two is the Australian Open.

McIlroy Tees off in round 2 PGA despite injury

Rory McIlroy hurt his wrist early in the first round of the 2011 PGA Championship, but was on to finish on even-par 70. But how would that wrist overnight respond? He would continue to play in the last major?

Yes, he can continue, and is. McIlroy teed from round 2 early Friday morning, opening with a bogey 5 on the first hole.

After the Olympics on Thursday received McIlroy the wrist a more thorough investigation of doctors. The injury was diagnosed as a strained tendon in his right wrist. "He will, of course, the rest tonight and he will see how it feels in the morning on the range," said his management company in a statement.

McIlroy show up on the range very early Friday morning, went through its paces and decided to continue playing.

The damage has occurred on the third hole of the first round. McIlroy took with his ball to rest very close to the root of a tree, a swing on it. He let go of the club, trying to time it just right to assess the impact of club-to-root-to-wrist, but immediately showed pain reduction. He came close to withdrawing right then. But McIlroy visited with on-site physiotherapists during breaks in the game, ice applied as he could, and had the wrist taped, and, as noted, managed to shoot 70.

McIlroy is very lucky that the damage was not worse than a strained tendon. Slamming a club in an access point or a buried rock can sometimes result in many more serious injuries of the wrist sprains, breaks.

On Friday, again with his messes McIlroy right wrist taped.

Scott WINS Bridgestone in large introductory to PGA Championship

The 2011 PGA Championship tees off on Thursday, and the last great season got a great lead-in the form of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

A victory by the always popular Adam Scott. Super-Kids Rickie Fowler, Jason day and Ryo Ishikawa strong show. World No. 1 Luke Donald tying with Fowler for the second (day and Ishikawa tying for the fourth). Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and David Toms, who won the last PGA Championship played at Atlanta Athletic Club-finishing in the Top 10.

Hmmm ... What is missing ... oh, Yes, those two old dudes: Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Undoubtedly the TV ratings (and website hits) for the Bridgestone higher would have been had Woods and Mickelson in the mix, and you can bet the PGA of America (and its TV partners) are the only hope for next week in Atlanta.

But the big mix of names-top players, young players, rebounding players, popular players-on Bridgestone was nice to see.

Steve Williams played in Scott's win, or was Scott win a big tournament so soon after the hiring of Williams full-time just coincidence?

Well, sure, have a caddie the caliber of Williams a good thing. So much of confidence, and golf is a boost of confidence that Williams for Scott can offer is a bonus; If Scott more sure of the advice that he gets is, then he is more sure of themselves.

But too much will probably be made of the angle Williams. It comes to the player, not the caddie. It comes to Scott, not Williams. Scott hit the shots and made the more putts.

And while Ishikawa not the Bridgestone win, he's a big winner. It is the 19-year-old's best finish on the US or European tour, and comes in what his first season as a pro that has included some fight. But Ishikawa went a long way on the Bridgestone direction get another request for the presidential Cup. And the biggest reason is he such a winner is that he won a lot of money for the Japan recovery efforts. Don't forget that Ishikawa all of his 2011 golf revenue has pledged to help his country recover from the disastrous tsunami.
